The world discovered the worship song, “Way Maker” during the quarantine pandemic and it became a global hit because it brought succor to people and hope in a time of uncertainty and fear with several renown gospel artists singing different renditions amongst which is Michael W. Smith whose version made the song popular and known in the US. Leeland, Paul McClure, Darlene Zschech & William McDowell also did their own versions. Also the protesters who marched against racial injustice used the song as they expressed their grievance, asking God as the “way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper and light in the darkness” to intervene.

This song held top stops on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs and several others as it went on to clinch the 2020 Dove Music award as the ‘best Song of the Year’.
The original song writer ‘Sinach’ whose full name is Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu, in an interview with Travis Greene on the 1st of August on Instagram said she wrote the chorus in 2015 on a flight from US to Lagos when she was going through a change in ministry, leaving a place of comfort as she was instructed by God. She said she didn’t want to leave her place of comfort or move to test new territories so when she was reluctant to proceed, she said God “pulled the rug underneath” and God told her that “remember I am the one that makes the way for you, I am your promise keeper, the light in every dark situation, just step out, I am there with you, you don’t need to be afraid” and the song was born.
Anything that has value would surely stand the test of time as this song was released in 2015 but didn’t get to be heard worldwide until 2020 which points to the quality of the song and the power in the lyrics.

Sinach has always been a credible voice in the Pentecostal Christian music circle whose faith and commitment to her passion, music and God, hasn’t wavered even when she was under attack for being false and fake whenever she speaks in tongue during her ministrations. That is a woman who has been undaunted by whatever anyone says about her and her music: she fully has been committed to who she is and what she does.
As her song, “Way Maker” won an international award, making us all proud, we can say that excellent, credible people and content still comes out of Africa. The award shows the power of distinction which is not defined by geographical location, skin colour, race or gender. We can only imagine what Sinach would have given up to fulfill her destiny and pursue her dreams.
Excellence would always stand the test of time and transcends geographical boundaries.
