The opposing protests slated for Saturday, February 13, 2021, at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos have clashed over the activities planned for the day.
The group with the hashtag #OccupyLekkiTollGate promised to demonstrate at the tollgate against the decision by a judicial panel, which returned the tollgate back to the Lekki Concession Company.
The campaigners say the tollgate ought to remain shut until justice is served regarding those allegedly shot dead by soldiers of the Nigerian Army on October 20, 2020, during the #EndSARS protest against police brutality and bad governance in Nigeria.
Another group running the #DefendLagos campaign are in opposition to the protest, stressing that they do not want a repeat of the #EndSARS protest of October 2020, which led to the destruction of public and private properties in Lagos
According to sources a campaigner of the #OccupyLekkiTollgate planned protest, Wole Olubanji, who spoke to journalists tackled the #DefendLagos group.
He accused them of being sponsored by state agents, stressing that such was witnessed during the #EndSARS protest, which saw hoodlums attack the protesters.
When asked how both groups will be differentiated on Saturday, he said, “It is not only one person that will get there first. It’s going to be a mass. It’s going to be a massive protest. So, if we get there, people will identify themselves.”
Concerning the opposing protest, he said, “Let them do their protest and let us the #OccupyLekkiTollgate protesters do ours without any altercation.”
On his part, the #DefendLagos campaigner, Olusoga Owoeye, rubbished the #OccupyLekkiTollGate campaigners’ planned protest.
He accused them of being insurrectionists while recounting the arson allegedly committed by their members during the #EndSARS protest in Lagos.
On how his group will be identified on Saturday, he said, “Don’t worry about all those things. Just watch out. Some of us are veterans of protests. Some of these boys who are causing this crisis have never led any protest in their life.”
When asked to speak on the allegation that the government is sponsoring his group, Owoeye said, “I don’t answer that type of question. For me, those allegations are stupid, as far as I’m concerned.”
