Popular Nigerian rapper, Olanrewaju AbdulGaniyu Fasasi, popularly known as Sound Sultan has passed away aged 44.

According to a notice issued by Dr Kayode Fasasi on behalf of the talented singer’s family, he died in the early hours of Sunday, July 11, 2021, following a battle with Angioimmunoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma.

The family also asked that its privacy be respected as it comes to grips with the loss of the singer.

Recall that it was reported in May that the artiste was diagnosed with throat cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy in an hospital in the United States.

Sound Sultan’s career in showbiz started in the 1990s when he hosted shows to raise money for studio sessions.

By 1999, he had won numerous local talent-hunt shows. He released his first single “Jagbajantis” in 2000, which was a hit in Nigeria.

After independently releasing other singles and featuring in hit songs of other artists, he was signed to Kennis Music.

Sound Sultan began a working relationship with Wyclef Jean when featured alongside 2face Idibia and Faze on “Proud to be African” from Wyclef’s Welcome to Haiti: Creole 101 album.

In 2012, Sound Sultan was made a United Nations Ambassador for Peace for his exemplary lifestyle and career.

He released the rap single “Remember” in 2015 after a long absence from the music scene.

After the fallout of the African Basketball League, he joined forces with the organisers of the Continental Basketball League to become a team owner of Lagos City Stars (which won the league in 2017) and a facilitator of the league entertainment.

He is survived by his wife, three children and siblings.
