1. Abducted Zamfara NULGE chairman’s wife reportedly births baby girl in captivity
Ramatu Yunusa, wife of the chairman of the Zamfara State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Sanusi Gusau, abducted last Tuesday, was said to have been delivered of a baby girl while in captivity.
The PUNCH reported that Ramatu, who was nine months pregnant, was abducted in her husband’s house in Damba Gusau in the early hours of Tuesday.
News trending on social media reported that Ramatu was delivered of a baby girl at the bandits’ camp few hours after her abduction.
Speaking to The PUNCH, however, her husband, who said he also saw the same the news on Facebook, said he had yet to be contacted by his wife’s captors.
“I have seen the post on Facebook but the bandits are yet to reach out me.
“I can agree with the post because she could give birth at anytime because her expected delivery date is around the corner,” Gusau said.
2. Ikpeazu insensitive to Abia workers’ plight – APGA gov candidate
The governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance in Abia State, Chief Chikwe Udensi, has accused the state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, of being insensitive to the plights of medical and health workers in the state.
Udensi was reacting to some photographs of Ikpeazu and his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike, enjoying a holiday in Turkey.
The security expert said it was disappointing to see Ikpeazu abandon Abia health workers in the state, who are owed a backlog of salaries, for a holiday in an overseas country with a functional health system.
He said, “Medical doctors and workers are being owed 25 months salary arrears and the Nigerian Medical Association has directed their members in Abia to proceed on a strike and the governor is happily cruising on a holiday overseas.
3. Sallah: Senate embarks on 19-day recess
The Senate, on Wednesday, adjourned plenary to enable it proceed on the Sallah break.
The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, accordingly, announced July 19, 2022, as resumption date.
The Senate, before embarking on the three weeks recess, forwarded the request of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for the confirmation of Mohammed Bello as Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission to the Committee on National Planning.
It also passed the Federal Medical Centres (Establishment) Bill, 2022, after re-committal to the Committee of the Whole for consideration and passage.
4. 14 migrants including Nigerians die as boat catches fire in Senegal
No fewer than 14 migrants, including Nigerians have been reported dead following a fire incident that razed a boat in south Senegal.
Reports from the West African country also state that 21 people are injured as four of them suffered second degree burns as they embarked on a journey to Spanish Canary Islands before the boat caught fire.
The mayor of the coastal town, Kafountine in Casamance, David Diatta said that the fire incident occurred on Monday.
“We’ve been able to recover 14 bodies. The toll will likely rise,” Diatta said, according to InfoMigrants.
The boat carried 140 people including Nigerians, Guineans, Gambians and Senegalese, and almost 90 people survived the inferno were able to be identified.
5. APC plans e-membership platform for massive youths registration
The All Progressives Congress (APC) says it plans to unveil an e-membership platform for its youths wing to allow more Nigerian youths to join the party.
Mr Dayo Israel, National Youth Leader, APC, said this on Wednesday in Abuja when he inaugurated the APC Youth Wing National Special Task Force on Revalidation and Registration of APC Youth.
Israel said that with the e-membership, more Nigerian youths would be brought into the party.
He expressed optimism that such youths would work for the party to ensure its victory, ahead of the 2023 general election.
“We are going to be engaging all the Senior Special Advisers (SSA) and Special Advisers on youths across the 36 states of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
6. Pen-Cinema Bridge compensation: Sanwo-Olu presents accommodation to 14 displaced families
Lagos State Governor, Bababjide Sanwo-Olu has presented apartment keys as resettlement compensation to14 families displaced during the construction of the iconic Pen-Cinema Bridge in Agege area of the state.
Sanwo-Olu presented the apartment keys to the beneficiaries on Wednesday, at the unveiling of ‘Greater Lagos LBIC Apartments’ inside the existing Ijaye Housing Estate at Pen-Cinema.
The ‘Greater Lagos LBIC Apartments’ are four new buildings comprising 48 units of 2 and 3 bedroom flats, and four units of 4-bedroom maisonette, making 52 apartments in total.
Speaking on the occasion, Sanwo-Olu described the initiative as “a testament of our administration’s commitment towards providing affordable housing for Lagosians.”
Also, Sanwo-Olu opened the newly-built containerised modular classroom block in Vetland Junior Grammar School, Agege.

7. Bulkachuwa: governors responsible for our failed return bid
Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa (Bauchi North) said yesterday that the aggrived APC Senators who met with Buhari accused governors of “deliberate efforts to wrest power” from the people.”
He said when he personally complained about the process adopted for the primary, the answers he got showed that governors had “a predetermined mindset.”
“I complained about the whole process to party chieftains in my state and the team that was sent from Abuja to conduct the primary, but the answers I got were unfriendly,” he said.
Blaming a serving minister for his inability to get a return ticket, Bulkachuwa expressed happiness that the President and the party’s leadership had promised to look into the matter.
8. Singer R. Kelly gets 30-year jail term for sex crimes
US singer R. Kelly has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for using his celebrity status to sexually abuse children and women.
The R&B artist, 55, was convicted last September in New York of racketeering and sex trafficking crimes.
He had faced years of allegations and the judge on Wednesday said he had an “indifference to human suffering”
Lawyers for the singer, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, say he will appeal.
9. ASUU strike: Govt imposes ‘no work-no-pay’ policy on lecturers
Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Yobe State University branch, has tasked it members not to succumb to any kind threat from the state government aimed at creating division and distraction among them.
The charge was contained in a five-point resolution raised following an emergency congress meeting held by union to review the ongoing strike action and other local issues among which is the imposition of ‘No work-No pay’ strategy by government in the state.
Dr. Mohammed Saje Jajere, YSU-ASUU branch chairperson, noted that after extensive deliberations, the congress has unanimously reiterated its position to continue with the national strike, despite the no-work-no-pay strategy without notice
“As the struggle continues, the congress has commended its members for their commitment and steadfastness in the patriotic struggle for the survival of the university system in the country.
10. War: Spain sends clear warning to Russia
Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, told CNN on Wednesday, that NATO has been “naive” in its relations with Russia over the years.
Speaking from the NATO summit in Madrid, Sánchez said that NATO is “sending a clear message to Putin, which is that we are going to support Ukraine, and we are ready to support Ukraine until the Russian troops leave the country and they respect the territorial integrity and the national sovereignty of Ukraine.
“I think it is important to send this message of unity and determination of the international community, especially NATO allies, and of course the G7, in order to make possible to return to a scenario where different countries – especially Russia in this case – respect a rules-based international order, which is undermined because of this terrible war in Ukraine,” Sánchez continued.
Earlier US President Joe Biden had announced a significant strengthening of US force posture in Europe, vowing that NATO will meet every threat from Russia from the air, see or land.
