N3 Million Debt: Court Condemns Cleric For Announcing His Own Death While His Heart Still Pumps Blood

EKO HOT BLOG reports that a Nigerian cleric, Paul Oyewole, has been charged with fraud and breach of peace in an Ondo State Magistrate court.

The 43-year-old man of the cloth is accused of posting his own fake obituary on social media in order to dodge paying back a N3 million debt owed to a church member.

According to police prosecutor, Akao Moremi, Oyewole failed to repay the loan he obtained from Boyede Emmanuel and instead sent a false bank alert and then threatened Emmanuel when confronted about the debt.

The accused clergyman is also said to have stripped naked in front of Emmanuel’s home, further intensifying the situation.

In court, Oyewole pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and was granted bail of N1 million with two credible sureties. The trial has been adjourned until February 13, 2023.

The police prosecutor intends to call four witnesses to testify in the case. The defense counsel, Mrs. Queen Arokoyo, has asked for her client’s bail in the most lenient terms possible and has assured the court that he will not skip bail.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs Mosunmola Ikujuni, has laid down strict conditions for the bail, including the requirement that one of the sureties be a homeowner residing within the jurisdiction and that the defendant provide identification.
