Madrid staged an impressive comeback in the first game after Liverpool had taken a 2-0 lead. The Spanish giants went on to secure a three-goal advantage, leaving Liverpool with a mountain to climb in the return leg.
Liverpool famously staged a remarkable comeback against Barcelona in the 2019 semi-final second-leg, defeating the Spanish giants 4-0 at Anfield after losing 3-0 at Camp Nou. Klopp remains hopeful that his players can produce another historic win on Wednesday.
The Liverpool boss said, “What I said after the game three weeks ago was that Madrid are through to the next round. But three weeks later, we know there is a game to play and if it is only a one percent chance, I would like to give it a try.”
Despite the odds being heavily stacked against Liverpool, Klopp will be hoping that his players can draw inspiration from their past successes and produce a memorable performance in Madrid. The German coach will be relying on the likes of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino to lead Liverpool’s charge in attack, while the team’s defense will need to be at its best to keep Madrid at bay.
