Vote buying mars Ekiti governorship poll
There was a massive turnout of voters during Saturday’s governorship poll in Ekiti State as electorates trooped out as early as 6:45am.
The governorship election witnessed voters’ inducement while the technology deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Biometric Voter Authentication System did not function properly in some polling units, The Nations reports.
The INEC officials and materials arrived almost polling units early before the official time for the commencement of voting.
There were pockets of complaints about malfunctioning of the BVAS machines. In some of the polling units while the voters induced to vote in particular directions.
Our correspondents who monitored the election across the 177 wards observed that in most of polling units, the agents of the three leading parties induced the voters to influence the choice of who the electorate cast their voted for.
It was observed that the electorate were induced with the sums of money ranging from N4,000 to N10,000 at polling units, while the security personnel manning the units ignored the fraud.
While the APC paid voters with N10,000 PDP and SDP offered paid N5,000 and N4,000 per votes.
It was observed that, after the voters had voted, each voter would meet the parties’ representatives primarily dedicated for the task at the back of the polling units to collect money.
At ward 08 unit 04 and 05, Odo Aremu in Ado-Ekiti, operatives of Economic and Financial Crime Commission arrested for attempting to buy votes.
The agents who was arrested with a bag of cash as he was about to give a voter money after casting their votes. Other parties agents upon sighting the EFCC operatives took to their eels and left the books containing list of voters that had voted and collected money.
The operatives of the anti-graft agency who seized the money whisked the APC agents to an unknown destination. The incident disrupted voting at the units for some minutes before normalcy returns.
Earlier, the SDP governorship candidate, Segun had made allegations of vote buying while speaking with newsmen after casting vote at his Ward 2, unit 6, Ifaki Ekiti.
” I have been told selling and buying of votes are ongoing in Ado and Oye-Ekiti. This is not allowed in the law. I want security to move in and stop those doing that”, he said.
Also, PDP candidate, Kolawole alleged that vote buying was done at the state capital, Ado-Ekiti. But, he was quick to say that his party was not involved in vote buying deal.
He made the allegation at his country home, Efon Alaye, following allegation of inducement of voters by the political parties.
Besides, The Nation also saw some voters, who were agitating over neglect to benefit from the largesse.
These voters, who came from another polling unit in Ward 8, met Kolawole.
Shortly after, the voters were seen compiling their names on a sheet of paper.
But Kolawole discountenaced the allegation saying it was possible that other political parties were doing that.
However, he said he had heard reports that vote buying happened in the state capital, Ado-Ekiti.
He said: “We are not in government. We don’t have such money for vote buying.
“We heard there was vote buying in Ado-Ekiti, but PDP.
“We have campaigned and have left Ekiti people with their conscience to vote according to their conscience”, he said.
At unit 09, ward 10 in Ikere council areas, a gang of security operatives snatched huge money meant to buy votes. Many voters who had hoped to collect money we’re said to have been disappointed with the action of the security agents.
Some political party agents present at the polling unit said officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were on routine patrol when they stormed the polling unit.
The party agents, did not, however state which political party owns the money that was snatched.
They said the NSCDC officials took a short cut within the community and spend off.
When asked if they could identify the officers, one party agent said, “Even if I see the person, do you expect me to say this is the person? I know they will not admit that they collected money from this place. They will not even take it to their office.”
Speaker of the Ekiti State House if Assembly, Hon Funminiyi Afuye, who was seen at the polling unit, said the money supposedly snatched does not belong to the All Progressives Congress.
Hon Afuye said he had voted at his polling unit and had to monitor the election around his vicinity.
His words, “I have voted in my unit and I decided to just go about. But there is no violent anywhere. The people have been conducting themselves well.
“I wasn’t here when money was snatched . I am not aware of any money snatched. If they are snatching money, they are not snatching from my party.
“There is no violence that has been reported to me.”
Explaining why was he present at the polling unit other than where he voted, Hon Afuye said “By virtue of my position as the Chief Lawmaker in the State and I do not interfere with the process, I can observe election.
“Do you want me to go about without my security agents. Are they harassing people. They are on their duty. The only time I went towards the polling units was when I wanted to confirm the number of machines there.”
Spokesman for the Ekiti NSCDC, Afolabi Tolulope, said he was not aware of such incident.
He said he was not yet at the office to know if any NSCDC officials on patrol made report about money at voting centres.
Meanwhile, there were also pockets of ballot snatching at two polling units in Ilawe-Ekiti, Ekiti South West council area of the state and Ado-Ekiti.
The Spokesman of the Ekiti State Police, Abutu Sunday, confirmed the incident but said normalcy was restored immediately
He stated the Command have arrested four people for disruption of the voting excercise, adding that the suspects are already in its custody cooling their legs.

Election in Ido-Osi is generally free, fair
The election in Ido-Osi Local Government Area was generally free and fair, with no incidence of violence, The Nation reports.
As High Chief Victor Olawoye, a historian and the Odofin of Ido-Ekiti, succinctly put it, “contrary to earlier indications that heavens will fall and that thunders will strike, the election was largely peaceful in Ido-Ekiti where I monitored the developments dying the contest”.
He added: “People defied the early morning dew to come out to exercise their franchise.
“Initially, there were complaints about the slow pace of the voter verification process because the machine was malfunctioning. But, within one one hour, INEC rectified the fault.”
Chief Olawoye said he did not witness the reported threat of violence in Ido-Ekiti, but only heard about it. He said: “Apparently, it was a case of two fighting, which had nothing I do with the electioneering prices proper.
“Another thing I witnessed while trying t cast my ballot is the issue of vote buying. Although I did not witness anybody collecting money, I understand that the various political parties gave between N2,000 and N7,000 to voters that voted for them.”
Olusegun Akinola, an Ado-Ekiti-based lawyer and former commissioner of the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (ESIEC), said everything went well where he voted in Ido-Ekiti. He said: “The polling went went well, but I noticed while trying to cast my vote that the growing incidence of vote buying has come to stay.
Akinola added: “It is not as if money was being given to the voters openly. But, it was obvious that agents of the various political parties were inducing voters to vote for their candidates.
“All the parties were involved; it is just a matter of degree. From all indications, the security operatives were aware, but they simply looked the other way.
“To be able to collect their money, some voters made efforts to show who they voted for.
“There was no violence as such during the election. But, there was a reported case of two hoodlums who were involved in a mild confrontation that would have ended up affecting the election if it was not nipped in the bud by security operatives.”

Ekiti 2022: BIVAS help to douse tension, says group
The Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) has commended the use of Bimodal Voters Identification System (BIVAS) in th Ekiti governorship polls saying it helped to douse tension across the state.
It described the Ekiti State governorship election as an improvement on the nation’s democratic process.
Executive Secretary of CTA, Faith Nwadishi, who spoke in Ado-Ekiti sas voters were heavily induced despite large turnout of voters.
She said vote buying was becoming a major feature of the nation’s democracy as manifested during the Ekiti polls.
According to her, “Our observers reported parties paying as much as N7,000 for votes while in some instances packs of Sphagetti and Semovita were shared to voters.
“It is heartwarming to observe that some culpable party agents were arrested by the agents of EFCC. INEC, the Security Agencies and other stakeholders need to work out measures to effectively address this ugly phenomenon.
“BIVAS performed very well in the Ekiti elections with voter accreditation taking between two to three minutes on the average.
“Compared to other states where BVAS was CTA noted with satisfaction the performance of INEC officials during the election. In most of the polling units covered by our observers, polling officials exhibited professionalism and knowledge of their duties.
“This is an indication of improvement with regards to election logistics arrangement on the part of INEC. We hope this improvement will be consolidated upon and carried into the 2023 general elections.
“Reports from our observers in the field indicate that voter accreditation and voting started on time in most of the polling units observed. While there were hitches in a few polling units, our observers report indicated that about 80 percent of polling units opened on time.

The former Secretary to Ekiti State Government was decked in a white buba with his trademark green Awoist cap to match.
He was calm as he alighted from his utility vehicle. His presence was electrifying. A homeboy, he walked majestically with charisma and dignity, bowing to elders and shaking hands with youths.
He beamed an infectious smile as he advanced to the polling unit in front of the residence of a local chief, Ejisun Oyebanji, elder brother of his illustrious father, Pa Ezekiel Oyebanji, a foremost educationist.
Accompanied by security agents and aides, Oyebanji posed as a populist as he trekked many meters, waving his hands at the crowd of rural dwellers. As he exchanged banters with the natives in the rustic town, shouts of ‘Bao, Bao’ filled the air.
Although it was dizzling in the morning, heaven withheld the rain. Indeed, nature was kind and the weather was benevolent.
Electoral officers came very early. The machines never malfunctioned. Security agents policed the polling materials. There was no unruly behaviour.
Oyebanji expressed satisfaction with the process, saying there was no cause for alarm.
He hailed the performance of the electoral agency, noting that polling officers prepared well for the exercise.
Oyebanji dismissed allegation of voting buying in some locations, saying that APC members were not involved.
Asked to assess the exercise, he said:”I cannot assess the entire exercise. I can only assess the exercise in my polling unit. It has been seamless. I must commend INEC for a job well done.”
Oyebanji urged his supporters to remain orderly and avoid unpatriotic behaviour.
He said:”I will encourage them to be orderly, to be non-violennt, to persevere, to cast their vote and defend it.”
He said he expected total compliance with the Electoral Act.
Asked to clarify if there is a case in court, Oyebanji said:”I am not aware of any case in court.”
Many people in Ado Ekiti said they voted for APC because of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, whose intervention in the electioneering motivate them to rekindle faith in the ruling party.

PDP’s Kolawole alleges vote buying in Ekiti
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the ongoing governorship election in Ekiti, Otunba Bisi Kolawole has alleged vote buying at the state capital, Ado-Ekiti, The Nation reports.
But he was quick to say that his party was not involved in vote buying deal.
He said this in his home town Efon Alaye following allegation of inducement of voters by the political party.
The Nation also saw some voters agitated over inability to benefit from the largesse.
These voters, who came from another polling unit in Ward 8, met Kolawole.
Shortly after, the voters were seen compiling their names on a sheet of paper.
However, he said he had heard reports that vote buying happened in the state capital, Ado-Ekiti.
He said: “We are not in government. We don’t have such money for vote buying.
“We heard there was vote buying in Ado-Ekiti but not PDP.
“We have campaigned and have left Ekiti people with their conscience to vote according to their conscience.
“We have worked. Yes, we know that the situation is unbearable in Ekiti.”
He added that with the failing infrastructure in Ekiti, it was enough for the people to vote in PDP.
Pointing at a failing road, Kolawole said: “Look at the deplorable roads for example at the headquarters of a local government area, can you imagine this kind of thing?”
“This is enough reason for voters to revolt against the ruling party and vote for the opposition party.
“So, we are very sure that the people will vote enmasse for PDP and at the end of the day, Bisi Kolawole will emerge the next governor of Ekiti, by the grace of God.”

Security operatives snatch money at Ekiti polling unit
Security operatives have snatched huge money meant to buy votes at polling Unit nine Ward 10, Ikere local government area, The Nation reports.
The action of the security operatives disrupted voting at the unit for about 39 minutes.
Many voters who had hoped to collect money were said to have been disappointed with the action of the security agents.
Some political party agents present at the polling unit said officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were on routine patrol when they stormed the polling unit.
The party agents, did not, however state which political party owns the money that was snatched.
They said the NSCDC officials took a shortcut within the community and spend off.
When asked if they could identify the officers, one party agent said: “Even if I see the person, do you expect me to say this is the person? I know they will not admit that they collected money from this place. They will not even take it to their office.”
Ekiti Speaker Funminiyi Afuye, who was seen at the polling unit, said the money supposedly snatched does not belong to the All Progressives Congress.
Afuye said he had voted at his polling unit and had to monitor the election around his vicinity.
His words, “I have voted in my unit and I decided to just go about. But there is no violent anywhere. The people have been conducting themselves well.
“I wasn’t here when money was snatched. I am not aware of any money snatched. If they are snatching money, they are not snatching from my party.
“There is no violence that has been reported to me.”
Explaining why was he present at the polling unit other than where he voted, Afuye said “By virtue of my position as the Chief Lawmaker in the State and I do not interfere with the process, I can observe election.
“Do you want me to go about without my security agents? Are they harassing people? They are on their duty. The only time I went towards the polling units was when I wanted to confirm the number of machines there.”
Spokesman for the Ekiti NSCDC, Afolabi Tolulope, said he was not aware of such incident.
He said he was not yet at the office to know if any NSCDC officials on patrol made report about money at voting centres.

He said: “I have done my part, I’ve voted for my party, whatever the outcome is the wish of the people.
“I think there was a place where they complained of rubber stamp and the people insisted that stamp must be provided before they will continue with the process.
“In my ward alone, we have seven security personnel, apart from the other security personnel that are patrolling. I think that that is a wise and good arrangement.
“The process itself is quite fair and I think it will make the process count. Usually, you will expect the people to wait behind to defend their votes. Even if you don’t tell them to wait, they will want to wait so that the votes are counted correctly.”
